One of the most important festivals in the lives of Muslims all over the world, Eid Al-Adha 2022 will be celebrated on the 9th of July. The occasion will span over a period of four days where all those celebrating will offer their prayers in remembrance of Prophet Ibrahim. Eid ul-Adha is known as Bakraid in India.
However, what is the story behind this paramount festival of the ‘Grand Eid’? Let’s have a look at the history of its origination, the dates and places of Eid Al-Adha 2022 or Bakra Eid 2022 celebrations in the United Arab Emirates.
Significance of Eid Al-Adha or Bakra Eid
The festival of Eid Al-Adha dates back to the historic event when Prophet Ibrahim had a lucid dream-vision. In the story mentioned in Chapter 37 of the Holy Qur’an, Ibrahim envisioned in the dream that the God Almighty asked him to make a sacrifice of his son, Ismail as an act of submission and obedience. Completely devoted to God, Ibrahim took Ismail to the top of Mount Arafah and geared up to sacrifice him. But, as he was about to make the ultimate sacrifice, he was stopped by the archangel Jibril as he carried along with him a ram in tow.
Jibril announced that Ibrahim’s faith was vindicated and that the ram is to be sacrificed instead of Ismail as a ransom. Eid Al-Adha is commemorated by Muslims across the world reflecting on Ibrahim’s submission, devotion and obedience. The day has been honoured as the Day of Sacrifice since then. The same story has also been mentioned in the Bible and is familiar to Christians and Jews as well.
The Day of Sacrifice marks the conclusion of the Pilgrimage or Hajj, the fifth pillar of Islam. Men and women who are financially and physically stable are obligated to take upon this pilgrimage once in their lifetime. It is one of the most important festivals/occasions for Muslims. Anybody who celebrates this festival honours at Islamic centres and major mosques globally.
